This is a simple background that uses a repeating circular motif. I worked in several layers, and really, could have stopped at any point after the first layer of circles was applied, and would have had a perfectly workable background.
Materials:
A book, journal, or paper that will accept paint. I did my samples in an old dictionary.
White gesso.
Liquid matte medium.
Craft acrylics in several related colors.
Sponge brushes or foam makeup sponges.
Magazine pages.
A circle punch.
Sequin waste.
A sea sponge.
Here’s the background shown in the video. Gesso, then magazine circles applied with a glaze mixed from pale blue paint and liquid matte medium. A slightly darker blue glaze layer, applied unevenly, and then a bright green glaze layer. Green paint applied with a sea sponge through sequin waste. White circles made by dipping a jar lid in paint, and pressing it onto the background. Dark green applied around the edges with the sponge.
A second background, using a variation of the same steps. Gesso, then magazine circles applied with light blue glaze. A slightly darker blue glaze layer, applied unevenly, and then a bright green glaze layer. White jar lid circles. Darker green dots applied with a large pencil eraser used as a stamp.
Never waste your leftover paint! Here, I just took an old credit card, and wiped the lighter colors of paints across the surface of the pages. Then I took all the foam sponges I’d used to apply glazes, and used them to dab on the rest of the paints.
