Layout #5 - Circle on Crossed Ribbons

22 July 2007 3 Comments

This week’s template uses two ribbons crossed over the background. Notice on all the templates how the ribbons are positioned to create four background blocks of different sizes and shapes? Here’s an art school motto for you:

Asymmetry creates dynamism.

That’s a fancy way of saying that compositions that aren’t symmetrical are more visually interesting than those that are. The explanation of this is long and technical, and has to do with switching from the side of our brain that’s logical and orderly to the side that’s creative—asymetrical compositions bypass that logical side of the brain, and let our creative side take over. ’nuff said?

There are a variety of ways to treat this template. Here, I’ve chosen a solid background, and printed ribbons that closely match the color of my circular element. The eye treats the ribbons and circle as one.

In this card, I’ve used printed papers on the bottom blocks, and solids on the top. The solid circle contrasts with both the backgrounds and the ribbons, creating a much stronger focal point than the previous card. Notice also that the circle doesn’t have to be an image.

Here’s a whole lot of contrast between background, ribbons and circular element. Notice how I’ve used the very brightest element to frame the focal image—you really have to fight not to look at that little circular image.

    Hi Lisa,
I love this layout template, I think I am going to make my christmas cards like this with just a santa face in the circle.
    Wonderful!
    Thank you so much.

I love these ribbon cards. I can see them with light green cards and red ribbon and a round santa head. I can’t wait to try them for christmas.

Thanks for getting me to take another look at some of your great ideas. I love your web site.

Lisa, I was drawn into the artist world late in life and am often intimidated by the wonerful art that is shared on the sites I belong to. Your site is such a help. It’s so nice the way you break down the techniques with easy to understand steps. These card sketches, however are my favorite. All of my cards are cookie cutter images of each other. This sketch is my favorite. It can be elegant and classy or fun and playful depending on the elements you choose. Thanks for sharing.
