Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam…

I’ve been experiencing a higher than usual amount of comment spam recently. This isn’t anything any of you are posting—your comments are terrific, and much appreciated. This is stuff generated by bots designed to post hundreds of irrelevant comments filled with links to all sorts of things I’d just rather not know about *ahem*.

In order to thwart the evil spammers, I’ve installed a sort of comment firewall this morning. 99.9% of you won’t notice anything different—but a few of you may find you cannot post comments. You should get a message from the firewall telling you why: either you have javascript or cookies completely disabled, or your comment is too short (meaning it’s only a single word). For this, I apologize.

I’m sorry I’ve had to install something that might block any real human who visits this site from commenting, but honestly, this morning I woke up to three real comments, and 15 from spammers—and that’s been happening all day, every day for the past week or so. A girl can only wade through so many offensive link-infested comments before she snaps!

  1. good idea..i think all groups these days get spammers of some sort..its a shame…but really not appropriate most of the time..esp the ones about growing a bigger male part when most readers are women..i get them everywhere..grrrr
now should we have a challenge to change the look of a spam can !!LOL..those things have been the same since forever!!

  2. I hope Blogger comes up with an idea to stop these blog spammers. I don’t get heaps but enough to be annoying. I have my comments set where I moderate them and I’m being very careful because the spammers are getting more clever. Some actually make a blog showing just a few posts and when you go visit to reciprocate a comment (thinking they are legit), all their blog links automatically open advertisement pages. VERY annoying!

  3. I apoligize for not including my address to your Message in a Bottle. This was the first time I joined your group. Here is my address: personal information removed

  4. @Caprice: Somehow, I don’t think this is the right place to sign up for Message in a Bottle—but I’d be happy to send you a can of Spam…

  5. I remember having Spam once…It has become a cultural icon in more ways than one.

  6. I was scrolling thru the Blog and the cans of Spam caught my
eye. My husband and I visited the Spam Museum in Austin, MN.
As we walked in the door, I advised my husband, Remember this
was your idea! I enjoyed it, in the entry hall, they have
3,000 empty cans on the upper wall. It is quite impressive!
It does not cost anything and it was an enjoyable experience.
